In a strategic move to bolster its range of tactical unmanned solutions, Airbus Helicopters has formally entered into an agreement to acquire Aerovel, a leading unmanned aerial system (UAS) provider. The acquisition includes Aerovel’s flagship UAS, Flexrotor, which is designed for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions both at sea and over land.

This strategic acquisition aligns with our vision to expand our UAS offering and respond to a growing customer demand worldwide for additional mission capabilities such as manned-unmanned teaming. Aerovel’s expertise in autonomous flight technology will undoubtedly complement our UAS development with the VSR700, as well as the work that we have been doing to develop interoperability,” according to Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters.
The Flexrotor, characterized by its modern Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities, boasts a maximum launch weight of 25 kg. Operating for 12-14 hours in a typical configuration, this small tactical unmanned aerial system is equipped to handle ISTAR missions effectively. Its adaptability is evident through the integration of various payloads, including an electro-optical system and advanced sensors, catering to the unique mission requirements of customers.
With the capability to autonomously launch and recover from land or sea, requiring a minimal 12 by 12 ft. area, the Flexrotor is particularly suitable for expeditionary missions with a reduced logistical footprint. The UAS has been proven in missions supported by the US Department of Defense (DoD), showcasing its effectiveness as a force multiplier in challenging, high-threat, GPS-denied environments. Additionally, its applications extend to parapublic missions, such as forest fire surveillance and ice navigation in the Arctic Ocean.

Aerovel, headquartered in Bingen, Washington, will retain its status as a US-owned company and will continue collaboration with the US DoD under Airbus’ Special Security Agreement (SSA).
While the acquisition has received approval from the relevant bodies of both Airbus Helicopters and Aerovel, the transaction is still pending regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. The anticipated closing of the acquisition is slated for the year 2024.
