MIAA Enhances NAIA Terminal 3 Cooling System with Final Upgrade Phase

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is in the final stages of an essential upgrade to the air cooling system at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. This initiative aims to address and resolve the long-standing issues of inadequate cooling that have affected both passengers and airport operations.

Earlier this year, MIAA made a significant investment in new cooling towers, which are strategically designed to optimize the terminal’s piping infrastructure. This upgrade is expected to vastly improve the overall efficiency of the air conditioning system at Terminal 3. The installation of these six (06) new cooling towers is scheduled for 16-17 July 2024, with work taking place from 2100H PhST to 0900H PhST.

During this 12-hour period, the centralized cooling system will be temporarily shut down to facilitate the integration of the new cooling tower piping into the main piping lines of the chiller plant. This temporary shutdown is necessary to complete the final phase of the upgrade process. To minimize discomfort, only the fans and blowers of the air conditioning units will operate, ensuring some level of air circulation in various areas of the terminal. However, the temperature might not reach optimal comfort levels during this time.

To further mitigate the impact, stand-alone air conditioning units will be strategically deployed across different areas of the terminal for spot cooling as a backup measure. Once the new cooling towers are fully integrated into the chilled water system, it is anticipated that the air conditioning units will gradually return to normal and more efficient operation, significantly enhancing the overall climate control within the terminal.

The 12-hour downtime will affect several key areas, including check-in counters, immigration departure zones, final security checks for both domestic and international flights, baggage carousels for international and domestic arrivals, and the arrival lobby. Approximately 27,000 passengers on 117 flights are expected to experience some discomfort due to reduced air circulation during the interruption.

In preparation for this, MIAA’s medical team will be on high alert and ready to respond to any medical emergencies that may arise from the reduced cooling. The airport authority is taking all necessary steps to ensure passenger safety and comfort during this critical upgrade phase.

MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Ines has called for understanding and cooperation from all airport users during the temporary shutdown. “Please bear with us. The upgrades are intended to bolster the terminal’s capability to maintain ideal temperatures efficiently, thereby ensuring a more pleasant experience for all airport users,” the airport chief emphasized.

This upgrade is part of MIAA’s broader commitment to improving the infrastructure and services at NAIA. By addressing the cooling system issues, MIAA aims to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency, contributing to a more positive travel experience. The authority remains dedicated to making continuous improvements that align with global standards and expectations, ensuring that NAIA remains a competitive and welcoming gateway for both local and international travelers.
