A Call for Sustainable Aviation: Philippines Takes Flight Towards a Greener Future

Amid the global efforts to combat climate change, the aviation industry emerges as a significant contributor to carbon emissions, prompting a collective commitment from key players to address its environmental impact. According to recent data, aviation was responsible for 2% of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022, showcasing a concerning trend of rapid growth compared to other transportation modes like rail, road, or shipping.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the global aviation sector, represented by ATAG (airlines, aircraft manufacturers, airports, and air navigation services), has vowed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for air transport by 2050. This commitment aligns with the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

In the Philippines, where air transportation plays a vital role in connecting its archipelagic terrain, the challenge of managing aviation emissions is particularly pressing. As a member state of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Philippines is tasked with implementing innovative and sustainable solutions in line with initiatives such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

One promising avenue for reducing aviation emissions is the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which not only addresses carbon footprint concerns but also promotes economic growth and energy security. In 2023, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) revealed plans to develop an SAF industry in the Philippines by leveraging the country’s biomass resources. Similarly, the Department of Energy (DOE) reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating the adoption of SAF in the aviation sector.

In response to these developments, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) is organizing the Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Powering #OnePHAviation event this coming Tuesday, 19 March 2024. This initiative aims to convene key stakeholders to discuss opportunities, challenges, and strategies for advancing sustainable aviation fuel in the Philippines. Through engaging discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, the event seeks to foster stronger public-private collaboration in building a sustainable future for Philippine aviation.

The event is scheduled to take place on 19 March 2024, from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM (GMT+8) at the Dusit Thani Manila, Makati City, Philippines. Distinguished speakers include Hon. Roberto Lim, Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports at the Department of Transportation; Hon. Alessandro Sales, Undersecretary for Energy Resource Development and Oil Management at the Department of Energy; Alex Reyes, Chief Strategy Officer at Cebu Pacific; Mun Ching Yap, Chief Sustainability Officer at Capital A (formerly AirAsia Group); Hon. Ma. Corazon Dichosa, Executive Director for the Industry Development Group of Department of Trade and Industry-Board of Investments (DTI-BOI); Kurt Edwards, Director General of the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC); Santiago Haya-Leiva, Technical Cooperation Regional Manager at the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA); and Samuel David, Country Manager at the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
