AirAsia Philippines is urging the tourism industry to embrace innovative and sustainable practices for the future. The airline presented its commitment at the 2024 Philippine Tourism and Hotel Investment Summit, highlighting the potential for tourism growth while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
“The Philippines, as a prime destination for nature and adventure tourism, has a tremendous opportunity to attract more visitors. However, ensuring environmental protection is crucial for all stakeholders, including airlines, which contribute over 2% of global CO2 emissions,” said Ricky Isla, CEO of AirAsia Philippines.
AirAsia acknowledges the need to accelerate efforts towards carbon neutrality. Isla emphasized the importance of adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and highlighted AirAsia’s Net Zero program, aiming for a group-wide use of SAF ranging from 2% in 2025 to 70% by 2050.
“We are committed to raising the bar for sustainability. Our initiatives include pursuing regulatory approvals for CORSIA offset management, expanding our regional sustainability campaign, and incorporating renewable energy at our maintenance facilities. AirAsia Foundation will also broaden partnerships for sustainable travel,” Isla stressed.
While long-term solutions are pursued, AirAsia Philippines has implemented proactive measures. These include utilizing fuel-efficient aircraft like the Airbus A321neo, optimizing flight operations, and encouraging passengers to bring reusable items on board.
Collaboration is key, according to Isla. “Cooperation between airlines and other stakeholders is vital to raise traveler awareness about sustainable practices.”
AirAsia Philippines also welcomed the Civil Aeronautics Board’s (CAB) decision to lower the fuel surcharge for July 2024. Passengers can expect reduced fees ranging from PHP151 to PHP542 for domestic flights and PHP498.03 to PHP3,703.11 for international flights.
The airline, recognized as the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline for 14 consecutive years, remains committed to offering affordable fares. Through its monthly Double Digit Sale and Flash Sale promotions, AirAsia Philippines aims to make travel accessible while promoting sustainable tourism practices.
