Airbus Begins Flight Testing of H160M “Guépard” Military Helicopter for French Armed Forces

Airbus Helicopters has officially launched the flight test campaign of the H160M “Guépard,” marking a significant milestone in France’s Joint Light Helicopter program. The H160M is a militarized version of the civil H160, developed to serve as a versatile and modern multi-role platform for the French Army, Navy, and Air and Space Force.

The maiden flight of the H160M was conducted at Airbus Helicopters’ headquarters in France, led by flight test pilot Samuel Chartier and engineers Nicolas Certain, Laurent Maruejols, and Alban Corpron. This first prototype is part of a three-aircraft development fleet that will accelerate the validation and certification of the new helicopter.

Chosen by the French Ministry of Armed Forces to replace five different helicopter types, the H160M will streamline operations across all military branches. France is expected to order 169 units, with deliveries slated to begin in late 2028. Airbus will also provide operational support and maintenance for an initial 10-year period.

The H160M, named “Guépard” by the French Armed Forces, builds upon the advanced civil H160 platform, incorporating significant military enhancements. These include Thales’ FlytX avionics suite and an Airbus-developed mission system designed for operations in degraded environments. The helicopter’s high connectivity and modular architecture make it adaptable for a wide range of missions, from search and rescue to combat.

Equipped with Safran Arrano engines and 68 patented innovations, the H160M is designed for efficiency, low environmental impact, and reduced operating costs. It supports drone cooperation and includes advanced communication systems for seamless integration into joint operations.

For armaments, the H160M will feature the Airbus HForce weapon system, capable of integrating a variety of effectors such as 12.7 mm machine gun pods, guided rockets, and pintle-mounted 7.62 mm machine guns. It also boasts cutting-edge sensors like Safran’s Euroflir 410 and Thales’ AirMaster C radar, along with a comprehensive self-protection suite to counter electromagnetic and optical threats.

With its next-generation design and modular military capabilities, the H160M Guépard is positioned to become a cornerstone of French military aviation in the years to come.
