Airbus, OCCAR Sign Major Update to A400M Support & Capability Contracts

Airbus and the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) have strengthened their partnership with the signing of two significant contracts aimed at enhancing support and operational capabilities for the A400M military transport aircraft. These agreements, titled the Global Support Services 3 (GSS3) contract and Block Upgrade 0, promise to bolster the capabilities and reduce operational costs for the multinational fleet of A400M aircraft operated by nations including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Airpower at Airbus Defence and Space, highlighted the strategic importance of the A400M for Europe’s defense and its role in enabling operational autonomy. “The A400M is a clear enabler of the sovereignty of our nations and the strategic autonomy of Europe,” he remarked. Citing examples such as the Kabul airlift and recent Pacific Skies exercises, Dumont emphasized the need for enhanced interoperability across the fleet’s customer nations. With over 130 A400Ms in service and a collective 200,000 flight hours, the new contractual framework aims to offer significant savings while maintaining high standards of performance and support.

Joachim Sucker, Director of OCCAR, underscored the importance of robust support for a sophisticated platform like the A400M. “The GSS3 contract signed by OCCAR with Airbus illustrates the ambition of A400M user nations to operate sustainably in the most demanding environments,” he noted, commending the aircraft’s versatility across various mission requirements.

GSS3: Comprehensive Support for All A400M Operators

Replacing a previous support agreement from 2019, the GSS3 contract introduces a full suite of tailored support services designed by Airbus to meet each user nation’s requirements. The contract includes ground equipment, parts delivery, and technical assistance, providing a performance-based, flexible approach for military operators and industry players. The GSS3 framework encourages pooling and sharing resources across nations, promoting cost savings and boosting fleet availability through established performance indicators.

Block Upgrade 0: Enhancing the A400M’s Operational Capabilities

The Block Upgrade 0 contract represents a major step in upgrading the A400M’s capabilities beyond the original design specifications. Key enhancements include improvements to flight management systems, ensuring compatibility with NATO requirements. Additional upgrades, such as a Tactical Information Enhancement, Satellite-Based Landing System, and Narrow Band SATCOM with onboard WiFi, will improve operational efficiency and streamline crew missions.

This end-to-end contract will cover the development, certification, and in-service support for these advancements. The initial development phase is already underway, with completion expected by the end of 2026. Subsequent phases, including fleet-wide upgrades and crew training, are projected to continue through the end of the decade.

With over a decade of proven reliability in both combat and humanitarian missions, the enhanced A400M will deliver heightened performance in tactical and strategic scenarios. These upgrades aim not only to broaden the aircraft’s operational scope but also to reduce workload for crews, marking a milestone in Airbus and OCCAR’s commitment to the aircraft’s future capabilities and interoperability across Europe’s defense forces.
