In a move that signals a bold new era for West Coast aviation, Alaska Airlines has finalized its largest aircraft purchase in company history. The multi-billion-dollar deal with Boeing serves as the cornerstone of the carrier’s “Alaska Accelerate” strategic plan, aimed at aggressively expanding both domestic capacity and international reach.
The landmark agreement encompasses a mix of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft designed to modernize the fleet while lowering operational costs. Specifically, the order includes one hundred ffive (105) Boeing B737-10 airplanes, with options for an additional 35 units. As the largest variant in the B737 MAX family, the B737-10 is intended to anchor high-density domestic routes. In addition, the airline has ordered five (05) B787 Dreamliner widebody jets to bolster its growing long-haul presence in European and Asian markets.
Alaska Air Group CEO and President Ben Minicucci noted that this investment is a critical building block for the company’s future. He indicated that the new fleet will provide the foundation for steady, scalable growth, allowing the airline to reach more global destinations. By utilizing the most fuel-efficient and technologically advanced aircraft available, the airline aims to enhance the passenger experience while maintaining a competitive edge in a crowded market.
The B737-10 is expected to be a game-changer for Alaska’s single-aisle operations. By replacing older models with this high-capacity variant, the carrier can serve more passengers per flight at the lowest seat cost of any comparable narrow-body aircraft. The relationship dates back to the delivery of a Boeing B727 in the 1960s. Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, highlighted the long-standing trust between the two organizations, noting that Alaska’s record of strong performance has made this historic expansion possible.
Currently, Alaska Airlines operates a fleet of 248 Boeing B737 aircraft. With this latest announcement, the carrier now has 174 B737 MAX jets on order, ensuring that its fleet remains one of the youngest and most environmentally friendly in the industry.
