Alaska Airlines Invests in JetZero to Advance Sustainable Aviation Technology

Alaska Airlines has announced a significant investment in JetZero, a trailblazing company at the forefront of developing a new Blended-Wing Body (BWB) aircraft. This innovative aircraft design promises to revolutionize aviation with up to 50% less fuel burn and lower emissions. The investment underscores Alaska Airlines’ commitment to driving technological advancements that align with its long-term sustainability goals, including the ambitious target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

If you may recall, Alaska Airlines first invested in JetZero during the company’s Series A funding round last year, making it the first airline to back this innovative venture. The airline’s investment was facilitated through Alaska Star Ventures (ASV), its dedicated investment arm. ASV’s mission is to influence the future of the aviation industry by identifying and supporting breakthrough technologies that can help the airline meet its environmental objectives. This latest investment in JetZero is a key component of Alaska Airlines’ comprehensive sustainability strategy, which includes initiatives in operational efficiency, fleet renewal, sustainable aviation fuel, waste reduction, and the development of electrified aircraft.

Diana Birkett Rakow, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Alaska Airlines, emphasized the airline’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Rakow expressed pride in partnering with JetZero to develop a next-generation aircraft that promises a substantial improvement in fuel efficiency. She highlighted the shared vision of both companies for a more sustainable future in aviation and the excitement surrounding their collaboration.

The BWB aircraft, central to JetZero’s development efforts, is distinguished by its unique design that seamlessly integrates the wings and fuselage into a single smooth shape. This design significantly reduces aerodynamic drag, leading to an anticipated 50% reduction in fuel consumption compared to traditional tube-and-wing aircraft. The aircraft’s spacious interior not only allows for innovative seating arrangements but also enhances passenger comfort, offering a quieter and more enjoyable flight experience. The reduced weight and drag of the BWB design contribute to its potential as a game-changer in sustainable aviation.

Tom O’Leary, CEO and Co-founder of JetZero, highlighted the BWB design as the most impactful technology currently in development for reducing fuel burn and emissions. O’Leary emphasized that the BWB aircraft will provide airlines with immediate benefits, including cost savings, lower emissions, and an improved customer experience. He also welcomed Alaska Airlines to JetZero’s team of innovators, expressing confidence in the aircraft’s potential to reshape the aviation industry.

JetZero’s leadership in developing the BWB aircraft is further solidified through its close collaboration with the United States Air Force, NASA, and the FAA. These partnerships are crucial in advancing the revolutionary blended-wing design and bringing it to market, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for the aviation industry.
