Boeing released its third annual Chief Aerospace Safety Officer (CASO) report, outlining the company’s continued commitment to strengthening product safety and fostering a robust safety culture.
“We are entrusted with the safety of everyone involved with our products,” said Mike Delaney, Boeing Chief Aerospace Safety Officer. “This report details our unwavering focus on continuous improvement in safety, compliance, and product quality.”
The 2024 CASO report highlights Boeing’s progress over the past year in several key areas:
- Renewed Focus on Safety Culture:
Following the 737-9 accident in January 2024, Boeing has redoubled its efforts to encourage employee participation in safety initiatives. This includes a significant increase (over 500%) in submissions to the “Speak Up” reporting channel, where employees can voice concerns about safety, quality, and compliance. In addition, Boeing launched the “Safety Experience at Boeing” digital learning platform and “Just Culture Guiding Principles” training programs to empower employees and foster a culture of open communication. - Enhanced Safety Practices:
Boeing has established business unit Safety Management System Boards to proactively identify and mitigate potential risks. The company is also leveraging external safety data sources and collaborating with the FAA to develop machine-learning algorithms for identifying emerging safety trends. Boeing has begun sharing operational data with engineering teams, allowing them to validate product performance in real-world scenarios. - Collaboration for a Safer Industry:
Boeing is expanding its Competency-Based Training & Assessment (CBTA) programs to more airlines, equipping pilots and other personnel with essential technical knowledge alongside crucial leadership skills like teamwork and communication. Boeing Flight Operations Representatives, comprised of pilots and aviation experts, have also doubled their engagement with airline flight crews, providing valuable support for the safe and effective operation of Boeing aircraft.
The CASO report reflects Boeing’s commitment to continuous improvement in safety across its entire organization. By prioritizing a strong safety culture, data-driven practices, and industry-wide collaboration, Boeing aims to ensure the continued safe operation of its products for passengers, crews, and everyone involved in aviation.
