The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is set to integrate an upgraded version of its Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system on Monday, 30 September 2024. This move aims to enhance the country’s air traffic management capabilities, ensuring smoother and more efficient operations for airlines and passengers alike.
As part of its ongoing modernization efforts, CAAP will be installing an updated version of the Air Traffic Management System (ATMS) software. This upgrade is carried out under the current software support and maintenance services contract with technology provider Thales. The new software promises improved functionality, greater stability, and enhanced overall efficiency in managing the country’s airspace.
The total cost for the software upgrade is reported to be approximately US$1.5 million. The installation is expected to take around 60 minutes and will commence at 0400H PhST on 30 September 2024, a time chosen to coincide with lower passenger traffic, minimizing disruptions to flight operations.
To ensure safety and manage potential delays, CAAP has implemented several precautionary measures. These include contingency procedures and an increase in separation time between departing flights during the software installation and system testing phase. While these adjustments may cause slight delays, they are vital to maintaining the safety and reliability of air travel in the country.
Despite these updates, CAAP assures that key air traffic systems, including communication, navigation, and surveillance equipment, will continue to operate effectively during the upgrade. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) will be issued to inform airlines and stakeholders of the impending integration.
CAAP, in a press release, said that they remain committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and efficiency in air traffic management, providing safer and more reliable services for all travelers.
