President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inaugurated the country’s first parallel runway at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA | CEB | RPVM) earlier today, marking a milestone expected to boost tourism and economic activity in Cebu and the Central Visayas region.
Joined by Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, President Marcos inspected the newly constructed 2.56-kilometer runway, which is set to accommodate increasing air traffic in the province. The additional runway aims to enhance connectivity, improve competitiveness, and create more opportunities for economic growth.
“This airport has been instrumental not only in the development of this province but also the Central Visayas region and other provinces that are served by flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport,” Marcos said.
The President emphasized MCIA’s crucial role in the region’s progress, citing the airport as a key driver of economic activity not just for Cebu but also for other provinces connected through its flights.
The newly inaugurated parallel runway is expected to accommodate more flights, reduce congestion, and improve operational efficiency, positioning MCIA as a stronger hub for both domestic and international travel.
According to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA), the airport experienced a significant passenger surge in 2024, recording 11.3 million travelers — 8.5 million domestic and 2.8 million international — through 99,100 flights. This marks a 13% increase in domestic travelers and a 12% rise in international passengers.
In addition to passenger growth, MCIA also handled 67 million kilograms of cargo in 2024, further underscoring its role as a vital gateway for trade and logistics.
The new parallel runway is expected to further elevate Cebu’s standing as a premier destination for tourists and investors, reinforcing its position as a key economic hub in the Philippines.
