DOTr to Standardize 2,100-Meter Runways Across Philippine Airports to Boost Tourism and Lower Airfares

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is taking decisive steps to standardize runway lengths across the country’s regional and provincial airports, setting a minimum requirement of 2,100 meters. The move aims to accommodate larger jet aircraft, reduce domestic airfare, and encourage more travelers to visit key tourist destinations such as Siargao.

This initiative comes under the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has called for measures to make domestic travel more affordable and accessible. Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez confirmed that all existing airport runways below the 2,100-meter standard will be extended, except where natural topographical constraints prevent expansion.

The 2,100-meter benchmark is significant because it allows medium- to large-sized jets to operate safely and efficiently. By accommodating bigger aircraft, airports can handle higher passenger volumes and more flights, which in turn drives competition among airlines and helps lower ticket prices.

Beyond runway extensions, the DOTr and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) are implementing night-rating capabilities at select tourist airports. Night-rated airports allow flights to operate during nighttime or early morning hours, increasing flight options and providing potential cost savings for passengers. According to Secretary Lopez, such operations typically include “red-eye” flights, which often have lower fares compared to daytime schedules.

The 2,100-meter standard is expected to have an immediate impact on popular destinations. Last year, fares to Siargao were reduced following government intervention, with one-way tickets dropping from PHP17,500 to approximately PHP11,700, and some fares available as low as PHP3,908. Complementary measures, such as the construction of a new cruise terminal in Siargao offering ferry services at PHP3,500, provide additional affordable travel options.

In addition, the DOTr and CAAP are reviewing airport terminal fees, with the potential to lower costs further for passengers using CAAP-regulated airports.

By enforcing the 2,100-meter runway standard, the government is laying the groundwork for a modernized domestic aviation network capable of handling larger aircraft, expanding flight schedules, and ultimately reducing travel costs. This policy is seen as a strategic step to boost tourism, improve airport safety, and provide more affordable air travel options across the Philippines.
