The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is in discussions with Philippine Airlines (PAL) to reduce airfare to Siargao (IAO | RPNS), one of the country’s top surfing destinations. The move aims to attract more local and international travelers in line with boosting tourism to the island.
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez revealed that an agreement has been reached with PAL to cut the current one-way airfare to Siargao from PHP17,500 down to PHP11,000. He expressed optimism that this adjustment could be implemented in the coming days, making travel to the island more accessible to both domestic and foreign tourists.
During a budget hearing before the House Committee on Appropriations, Lopez explained that the fare reduction is a step toward improving affordability for passengers. However, he also requested additional time to continue negotiations with PAL to explore the possibility of lowering fares even further. According to him, the goal is to make flights to Siargao not only competitive but also within reach for more Filipinos who want to experience the island’s beaches, surfing spots, and natural attractions.
Beyond airfare adjustments, the DOTr and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) are also studying long-term infrastructure improvements to support growing passenger demand. A key initiative under review is the proposed extension of Siargao Airport’s runway. This expansion would allow larger aircraft to land on the island, thereby increasing passenger capacity and potentially lowering ticket costs through economies of scale.
Industry experts note that reducing airfare while improving airport facilities could position Siargao as a stronger contender in Southeast Asia’s tourism circuit. The island, renowned for its surfing waves in General Luna and pristine natural scenery, has consistently drawn travelers but has also faced concerns over high travel costs that limit accessibility.
The proposed fare reduction and infrastructure upgrade come at a time when the Philippine government is pushing to enhance tourism as a major economic driver. Tourism officials believe that better air connectivity and affordable travel options are vital to sustaining the growth of destinations outside Metro Manila.
Siargao, which has earned global recognition as a prime surfing destination, continues to be a focal point of tourism development efforts. The DOTr’s collaboration with PAL, coupled with plans for airport improvements, is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that the island remains both an attractive and accessible destination for years to come.
