Embraer’s E190F freighter has achieved a significant milestone by receiving full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This approval marks a critical step in the Brazilian aerospace company’s expansion into the air cargo market. The FAA granted certification to Embraer’s passenger-to-freighter conversion, as well as the Cargo Loading System developed by U.S. Cargo Systems, in September 2024. This follows the aircraft’s certification by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC) in July, with certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) expected later this year.
The E190F is part of Embraer’s E-Freighter program, launched in May 2022 to meet the growing demand for regional cargo solutions driven by e-commerce and the need for faster deliveries. The E190F made its debut flight in April 2024 and was publicly showcased at the Farnborough Airshow in July.
“Achieving FAA certification is a pivotal moment for our passenger-to-freighter conversion program,” said Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “We are excited to fill a crucial gap in the air cargo market, meeting global demand for faster delivery solutions to regional markets. Our E-Jet footprint across the U.S. and worldwide positions us to offer optimal cargo solutions for this connected world.”
The E190F offers considerable advantages, with over 40% more cargo volume than previous models and three times the range of large cargo turboprops. The aircraft also boasts up to 30% lower operating costs compared to larger narrowbody freighters. With a maximum structural payload of 13,500 kg, the E190F provides a combination of underfloor and main deck capacity, making it a highly competitive option for modern cargo operations.
