KF Aerospace has achieved a historic milestone with the certification of the world’s first Boeing B737-800 Combi conversion, marking a major advancement in the field of aircraft modification. Transport Canada has officially approved the modification with the issuance of Supplemental Type Certificate STC #SA25-72, clearing the way for the aircraft to enter service and offering operators an entirely new level of operational flexibility.

The Boeing B737-800 Combi introduces a unique multi-role configuration, combining a forward cargo compartment with five pallet positions and a 90-passenger cabin in the aft section. This innovative layout makes it the first of its kind globally, with no comparable Combi aircraft currently operating in the United States, Europe, or other international markets. The inaugural aircraft was completed and delivered to Air Inuit in October 2025 as part of the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization efforts.
Building on the proven utility of the AEI 737-800SF large cargo door, the B737-800 Combi STC demonstrates the growing versatility of the aircraft platform. The certification also underscores the long-standing collaboration between KF Aerospace and AEI, which has spanned over three decades. By combining AEI’s cargo door conversion expertise with KF Aerospace’s engineering and operational strengths, the partners were able to develop a technically complex solution that meets stringent regulatory standards.

The conversion program required a substantial redesign of the aircraft’s interior and systems. KF Aerospace engineered and integrated fire detection, halon-based fire suppression, and advanced smoke-containment systems for the forward cargo area. Existing freighter-specific detection systems were also modified to meet Combi-specific certification requirements. The project led to the creation of hundreds of new parts and custom-engineered solutions, showcasing the technical expertise and ingenuity of KF Aerospace’s in-house engineering team.
KF Aerospace’s manufacturing, installation, and test teams played pivotal roles throughout the conversion, ensuring that every aspect of the aircraft met safety, regulatory, and operational standards. The B737-800 Combi meets customer demands for a high-capacity mixed-use aircraft, seamlessly accommodating both cargo and passengers while overcoming historical regulatory and engineering limitations in Combi aircraft development.

This achievement highlights KF Aerospace’s leadership in advanced aircraft conversions, custom Supplemental Type Certificate development, and innovative engineering solutions. With over 55 years of experience, KF Aerospace continues to serve corporate, commercial, and military clients worldwide, including Boeing, WestJet, Air Canada, Lynden Air Cargo, Flair Airlines, and the Royal Canadian Air Force. From its origins in the Okanagan Valley in 1970, the company has grown to provide aircraft maintenance, modifications, military aircrew training, charter services, cargo operations, and leasing, consistently delivering solutions that push the boundaries of aviation technology.
