Korean Air Flight Makes Emergency Descent After Cabin Pressure Loss

A Korean Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 (with tail number HL8352) flying from Seoul to Taichung (flight number KE189) experienced a dramatic emergency descent on June 22nd, 2024, due to a cabin pressurization problem.

The incident occurred roughly 50 minutes into the flight, prompting the pilots to initiate a rapid descent from cruising altitude to ensure continued oxygen supply for the 125 passengers and crew onboard. Flight tracking data indicates a descent of nearly 27,000 feet in approximately 15 minutes.

Prioritizing safety, the flight crew diverted the aircraft back to Incheon International Airport in Seoul, where it landed safely around 1940H local time. Medical personnel were on standby upon landing, as some passengers experienced ear pain and hyperventilation during the rapid descent. Reports indicate 13 passengers were taken to the hospital for evaluation, though no serious injuries were reported.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea confirmed the incident and detailed the minor injuries sustained by passengers. Korean Air arranged for a replacement aircraft, allowing the flight to resume its journey to Taichung on Sunday morning. The airline has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the delay.
