Lockheed Martin has announced an expanded industrial collaboration package for the Philippines as part of its F-16 Block 70 proposal under the country’s Multi Role Fighter (MRF) program. The aerospace and defense giant is partnering with Southern Methodist University (SMU) in a strategic initiative aimed at driving digital innovation, technology transfer, and workforce development in collaboration with Philippine universities and industries.
The enhanced offer highlights Lockheed Martin’s commitment to supporting the Philippines’ Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) while also promoting long-term economic growth and technological advancement. Central to the package is the establishment of a world-class research laboratory and training facility in the Philippines, which will serve as a hub for developing innovative solutions and prototypes applicable across multiple industries.
According to Jess Koloini, Lockheed Martin F-16 Business Development, the collaboration highlights the company’s dedication to fostering local capability. “We are committed to investing in the development of new capabilities and intellectual properties in close collaboration with leading universities and companies in the Philippines. This partnership will not only support the country’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP), but also create a lasting impact on the Filipino workforce, driving economic growth and prosperity,” Koloini said.
Through its collaboration with SMU, Lockheed Martin plans to integrate expertise from the university’s Center for Digital and Human-Augmented Manufacturing (CDHAM) and Deason Innovation Gym (DIG). These facilities are recognized for cutting-edge research and innovation in areas such as digital modeling, simulations, robotics, automation, virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. By tapping into these resources, Filipino professionals and researchers will gain access to advanced training and technology that can significantly enhance the country’s research and development capacity.
Key components of the expanded partnership include:
- Access to state-of-the-art innovation tools and equipment at SMU enables Filipino researchers and professionals to create and test prototypes.
- Funding support for business incubation, government-led initiatives, and academic programs designed to build sustainable local innovation ecosystems.
- Development of a world-class research and training facility in the Philippines, which will provide a platform for hands-on collaboration and technology transfer.
- Collaboration with Philippine universities and industries to create new intellectual properties and expand local capabilities.
Dr. Ben Zoghi, Associate Dean for Advanced Studies and Industry Partnerships at SMU, emphasized the long-term benefits of the partnership. “This partnership is an investment in the strength of the Filipino workforce. These projects will significantly boost the Philippines’ academia and industry, enabling them to leverage digital innovation technologies to drive economic growth and global industrial competitiveness,” said Dr. Zoghi.
The F-16 Block 70, the most advanced variant of the legendary fighter aircraft, is Lockheed Martin’s offering to the Philippines for its MRF program. Known for its unmatched capabilities, the aircraft combines cutting-edge avionics, proven combat performance, and cost-efficiency. By pairing its defense solution with an extensive industrial and technological collaboration package, Lockheed Martin aims to demonstrate its support not only for Philippine air defense but also for the nation’s broader economic and industrial growth.
