MIAA commences Power Maintenance Activities at NAIA Terminal 3

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), the current operator of all Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminals, has initiated a series of power maintenance activities starting 02 April 2024 slated to extend until 28 May 2024. The primary aim of these endeavors is to facilitate the replacement of deteriorated medium voltage switchgear components across eight (08) different electrical substations within Terminal 3. This initiative serves as a continuation of the NAIA Terminal 3 electrical systems upgrade project which commenced last 2023.

The power shutdowns, which will be conducted in a sectoral manner, are set to impact the open and multilevel parking areas, as well as substations in the South and North concourses, along with the main substation of Terminal 3. These shutdowns are scheduled to commence at midnight, coinciding with the period of minimal flight activity.

To mitigate disruptions, MIAA has arranged standby generator sets at each substation. These generators will ensure an uninterrupted power supply to critical airport systems, thereby facilitating the continuous processing of passengers and flights. Despite these measures, passengers may experience reduced air conditioning supply in certain areas, and occasional non-functioning elevators and escalators.

The airport authority emphasizes its commitment to completing these essential upgrades, notwithstanding the inevitable power interruptions necessitated by the project. This determination stems from the recognition of the importance of modernizing infrastructure to enhance overall airport efficiency and safety.

Recalling the initial phase of power interruptions from 29 November 2023 to 13 December 2023, the MIAA notes that the meticulously planned and coordinated maintenance activities did not significantly disrupt passenger or flight operations. No delays or cancellations attributable to the maintenance works were reported during that period.
