The revenue of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), operator of the country’s premiere gateway, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), has been down by at least PHP1 Billion already as of end April 2020.
This was revealed by no less than MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal during his recent interview at the Philippine government’s #LagingHand Public Briefing.
“Medyo malaki po ang kawalan ng ating paliparan. Sa ngayon po, last tally namin noong end of April, tumatala na po kami ng almost mahigit po isang bilyon na losses sa revenue sa ating paliparan,” according to GM Monreal.
(The airport has been incurring loss. Since our last tally, as of end of April, we recorded a loss of more than a billion pesos in revenue already,” according to GM Monreal.)
The airport boss also said that before the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) was imposed on the island of Luzon, the NAIA has been serving around 768 flights per day, on average. Now, under the ECQ, the NAIA accommodates at most ten (10) commercial flights daily.
According to the data from the Airports Council International (ACI), the NAIA served more 47,000,000 passengers in 2019. This was an increase of 6.25% from the previous year, and it was the highest since 2003 according to ACI.
The NAIA currently has four (04) passenger terminals, but as of 28 March 2020, passenger flight operations have been concentrated to the NAIA Terminal 1 due to the low volume of traveling public and imposition of the ECQ in Luzon.
