NAIA Terminal 3 Can Now Enjoy More Reliable Electrical System After Upgrades

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) successfully concluded the second phase of its electrical system upgrades at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. The project, which began on 02 April 2024 and finished today, 28 May 2024, involved replacing outdated medium-voltage switchgear components across eight electrical substations within the terminal.

The final stage of the power-related maintenance commenced at 0001H PhST and concluded at 0300H PhST. As planned, MIAA prioritized powering critical equipment and facilities crucial for uninterrupted flight operations and passenger processing during the upgrade. This included baggage handling systems, check-in counters, passenger boarding bridges, air conditioning systems, and security protocols. Generator sets provided backup power to ensure these areas continued functioning smoothly.

However, during the switchover between the main electrical grid and the generator sets, some areas, particularly curbsides, hallways, and roadways, experienced temporary lighting issues. MIAA Engineering, upon instruction from the General Manager, is currently addressing this concern to ensure these areas are properly powered by the generator sets and that consistent lighting is maintained throughout the terminal.

“These electrical upgrades are crucial for the smooth operation of the terminal, and we’re delighted to have completed them. This project guarantees a more reliable electrical system for Terminal 3. We acknowledge the temporary lighting issues in specific areas and apologize for any inconvenience caused. We are committed to resolving these issues completely and appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this time,” said MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Castro Ines.
