The New NAIA Infra Corporation (NNIC)‘s decision to begin the renovation of NAIA Terminal 4 in November 2024, just as the Christmas season kicks off, has sparked criticism from passengers and industry experts. The timing of the renovation, set to start on 06 November 2024, comes at the height of one of the busiest travel periods in the Philippines, potentially causing significant inconvenience to thousands of travelers during the holiday rush.
While NNIC aims to address safety concerns and modernize the airport’s oldest terminal, many question the logic behind commencing the upgrades during such a critical time. NAIA Terminal 4 currently handles around 2,900 passengers daily, including those flying with AirSWIFT, Sunlight Air, and Cebgo. With the renovation, all flights will be temporarily relocated to Terminal 2, adding further pressure on an already congested facility.
Some observers argue that the move lacks foresight, as the Christmas season typically sees a dramatic increase in air traffic. The influx of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returning home and local travelers taking advantage of the holiday break will compound the strain on the remaining terminals, particularly Terminal 2. By proceeding with the renovations at this time, NNIC runs the risk of overcrowding, delayed flights, and overall frustration for passengers.
NNIC, for its part, has assured the public that the renovations are necessary to ensure passenger safety and improve long-term airport operations. According to their press release posted on their Facebook page, the upgrades will focus on improving passenger flow and modernizing the terminal’s facilities. The renovated Terminal 4 is expected to reopen in February 2025.
However, many believe that NNIC should have postponed the project until after the holiday season, ensuring a smoother transition and minimizing disruptions. With millions of travelers expected to pass through NAIA in the coming months, the renovation could not have come at a worse time. The decision to proceed with the project during the peak season is likely to continue facing scrutiny.
