PAL Picks Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 Engines for New Airbus A350-1000

Rolls-Royce has announced that it has entered into a service agreement with Philippine Airlines (PAL) for the Trent XWB-97 engines that will be used to power nine (09) Airbus A350-1000 planes. The agreement is for TotalCare services, and it will provide the airline with a predictable cost for the maintenance and services of their new fleet.

TotalCare is a premium service offering that transfers time on wing and maintenance cost risk back to Rolls-Royce, providing operational certainty for customers. This service is supported by data collected through Rolls-Royce’s advanced engine health monitoring system, which enhances operational availability, reliability, and efficiency for customers.

“We are delighted to sign this long-term service agreement with Philippine Airlines for their Trent XWB-97 powered Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, as part of their long-haul fleet modernisation programme. We look forward to growing our long relationship with Philippine Airlines through this service agreement and to maximising their fleet performance, which already includes the Trent 700 powered Airbus A330-300 and Trent XWB-84 powered Airbus A350-900,” according to Ewen McDonald, Chief Customer Officer at Rolls-Royce.

The Trent XWB engine is known for its versatility and reliability, making it a great choice for both short-haul and long-haul flights. This makes it an excellent solution for passenger and freighter operators with diverse networks. Moreover, as the most efficient large aero engine currently in use, the Trent XWB is a vital component in Philippine Airlines’ sustainability journey. It offers a 15% advantage in fuel consumption compared to the first generation of Trent engines, making it more fuel-efficient and providing superior performance and noise levels. Additionally, the engine can operate on a 50% blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, making it even more eco-friendly.

“We value the strong relationship we have built over the years with Rolls-Royce, whose engines power our existing fleet of Airbus A350-900 and A330-300 aircraft. When our brand new Airbus A350-1000 aircraft enter service in the future, we expect the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines to give us the power, performance and all-around efficiency to operate our transpacific and transpolar flights that provide vital connections to North America from the Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia,” said Alvin Kendrich O. Limqueco, PAL Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President.
