Qantas announced significant changes to its Asia network, suspending flights to Shanghai due to low demand while boosting connectivity to other popular destinations. A new route from Brisbane to Manila will launch on 28 October 2024, offering four weekly flights on Airbus A330 aircraft. This marks Qantas’ return to the Manila-Brisbane route after more than a decade, adding over 100,000 seats annually between the Philippines and Australia.
Qantas resumed Sydney-Shanghai flights in October 2023 after a COVID-related hiatus. However, demand has not met expectations, leading to the route’s suspension on 28 July 2024. The airline will continue monitoring the Australia-China market and aims to return to Shanghai when demand recovers. Passengers with bookings on Shanghai flights from 28 July 2024 will be offered full refunds or alternative flight options.
The Australian carrier is increasing its flights to Singapore by 10%, with Sydney-Singapore flights increasing to 17 weekly returns from 11 December 2024, and Brisbane-Singapore flights increasing to nine weekly returns from 27 October 2024. In addition, flights from Sydney to Bengaluru, India, will become daily during the peak holiday season between mid-December 2024 and late March 2025.
Qantas’ Focus on Customer Needs
According to Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace, “We’re always looking to ensure that we have the right aircraft, on the right routes and at the right time of year to best meet the needs of our customers.” He emphasized that the decision to suspend the Shanghai route and increase flights to other destinations like Manila, Singapore, and Bengaluru was based on current demand trends. Qantas remains committed to maintaining a presence in China through its partners and existing Hong Kong flights, with plans to return to Shanghai when demand recovers.
The new Brisbane-Manila route highlights the growing importance of the Philippines as a destination for Australian travelers.
