The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has concluded its investigation into the F-16 crash that occurred on 08 May 2024 at Tengah Air Base. The probe, conducted by the RSAF with support from Lockheed Martin (the aircraft’s manufacturer) and the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau, pinpointed a rare malfunction of the aircraft’s pitch rate gyroscopes as the root cause of the accident.
Gyro Failure: A Critical Issue
Pitch rate gyroscopes are vital components within the F-16’s flight control system. These sensors constantly measure the aircraft’s rotation around its horizontal axis, feeding this crucial data into the Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC).
