In a strategic move to modernize and enhance its widebody fleet and international network, Thai Airways has placed a substantial order for 45 Boeing B787 Dreamliners. The announcement, made jointly by Boeing and Thai Airways at the Singapore Airshow 2024, signifies the airline’s commitment to optimizing its operations and meeting the surging demand for air travel in Southeast Asia.
Thai Airways has chosen the B787-9 variant as part of its long-term strategy to rejuvenate its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft, aiming to open new routes across Southeast Asia. The airline, already operating widebody jets, including the B777s and B787s, to nearly 60 destinations worldwide, sees the Dreamliner family as a key driver for increased efficiency.
“To accomplish our company’s and the national carbon neutral goals by 2050, the 45 new Boeing B787 Dreamliners will be equipped with GEnx engines, which are known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact. Furthermore, we are confident that the acquisition of the B787 Dreamliners will ultimately benefit our customers and support the growth of our country’s economy,” according to Chai Eamsiri, Thai Airways CEO.
The order, which was finalized in December 2023 but listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website, aligns with Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook for Southeast Asia. The outlook projects a three-fold increase in the region’s widebody fleet over the next 20 years, with an anticipated demand for nearly 800 airplanes, encompassing passenger jets like the Boeing B787 Dreamliner family and B777X, along with freighter models.
“Thai Airways’ strategic investment in the B787 Dreamliner builds on our long-standing partnership and signifies the airline’s commitment to operate a modern, efficient and flexible fleet. This order will support Thai Airways’ ability to meet demand, foster tourism and trade, and create further opportunities for this carrier,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing.
The B787-9, with its 20-foot (6-meter) longer fuselage compared to the B787-8, will enable Thai Airways to accommodate nearly 20% more passengers on longer routes, building upon the success of the B787-8. The Dreamliner family is recognized for its efficiency, reducing fuel use and emissions by up to 25% compared to older aircraft models.
Boeing and Thai Airways share a longstanding partnership spanning over 60 years, reflecting Boeing’s commitment to supporting Thailand’s aviation industry. The collaboration extends beyond business, with Boeing maintaining offices in Bangkok and actively participating in initiatives such as STEM education, programs for individuals with disabilities, and promoting sustainable livelihoods through permaculture methods.
The addition of 45 B787 Dreamliners to Thai Airways’ fleet not only marks a significant milestone in the airline’s growth strategy but also reinforces Boeing’s enduring commitment to fostering aviation excellence in the Southeast Asian region.
