Thailand Expands Air Power with Saab Gripen E/F Fighter Jet Order Worth SEK 5.3 Billion

Saab has secured a new defense contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply the Kingdom of Thailand with four advanced Gripen E/F fighter aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the Royal Thai Air Force’s modernization efforts. The order, valued at approximately SEK5.3 billion (about US$490 million), covers the delivery of three Gripen E variants and one Gripen F two-seater aircraft, along with associated equipment, training, and support. Deliveries are scheduled between 2025 and 2030.

The agreement reinforces Thailand’s long-standing partnership with Saab and further integrates the country into the global Gripen user community. In addition to the aircraft purchase, Saab has signed a contract with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) to provide a comprehensive offset package. This package includes significant defense technology transfers, industrial cooperation projects, and investments that will benefit multiple sectors of Thailand’s national economy.

“Thailand has chosen the most modern fighter on the market with which to build its next generation of strategic, independent capabilities. We welcome Thailand as the latest customer for Gripen E/F. The country is already a well-established Gripen operator and knows firsthand the strengths and versatility the aircraft brings to its armed forces,” according to Saab President and CEO Micael Johansson.

The Royal Thai Air Force has operated a squadron of Gripen C/D multi-role fighters since 2011, based at Surat Thani Air Force Base in southern Thailand. The addition of the Gripen E/F models will enhance the RTAF’s operational capabilities with upgraded avionics, advanced sensors, improved electronic warfare systems, and extended operational range. Once in service, the new aircraft will operate alongside the existing Gripen fleet, significantly boosting Thailand’s air defense and strategic deterrence posture.

The Gripen E/F represents the latest generation of Saab’s multi-role fighter platform, designed to perform a wide range of missions including air defense, interception, reconnaissance, and ground attack. Equipped with cutting-edge technology such as the AESA radar, advanced data links, and electronic countermeasures, the aircraft is built for interoperability and adaptability to evolving defense needs.

Thailand’s decision to invest in the Gripen E/F underscores its commitment to strengthening national defense and achieving greater strategic autonomy in the Asia-Pacific region. The inclusion of industrial cooperation and technology transfers is also expected to stimulate growth in Thailand’s defense industry, supporting local skills development and innovation.
