Air Niugini Secures Airbus Flight Hour Services Contract for New A220 Fleet

Air Niugini (PX | ANG) has taken another major step in modernizing its fleet with the signing of a long-term Flight Hour Services (FHS) agreement with Airbus to support its incoming fleet of A220 aircraft. The deal, finalized in Port Moresby, marks a significant milestone in the airline’s transition to next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft and in Papua New Guinea’s aviation development.

The agreement was signed by Anand Stanley, President of Airbus Asia-Pacific, and Captain Samiu Taufa, Officer-in-Charge and Acting Chief Operating Officer of Air Niugini. The ceremony also celebrated the arrival of the carrier’s first A220, delivered from Airbus’ main assembly line in Mirabel, Canada.

Under the contract, Airbus will provide Air Niugini with integrated component support through its FHS program. The power-by-the-hour model includes on-site stock, access to Airbus’ global spare parts pool, and comprehensive repair services. This arrangement is designed to ensure maximum aircraft availability, minimize unscheduled downtime, and optimize cost efficiency across the airline’s new fleet of 11 A220 aircraft.

Captain Taufa described the partnership as a key element of the airline’s transformation strategy. “We are pleased to sign this agreement with Airbus as part of our comprehensive preparations for our new A220 fleet. The arrival of the A220 marks a milestone in our long history and for the whole nation of Papua New Guinea. Working together with Airbus and our other partners, we are working at every level not only to meet but to exceed the expectations of our customers and the nation with the best products and services the industry has to offer,” Captain Taufa said.

Airbus executives also welcomed Air Niugini into the growing family of airlines supported by its FHS program. “We are delighted to welcome Air Niugini to the Airbus FHS family. This agreement underlines our commitment to provide Air Niugini with world-class maintenance solutions to optimise efficiency and ensure a smooth operation of their new fleet. We look forward to supporting Air Niugini in bringing the full potential of the A220 to their passengers and markets,” said Stanley.

The Airbus FHS model has been increasingly adopted by carriers worldwide, as it allows airlines to benefit from Airbus’ predictive maintenance tools, engineering expertise, and global logistics network. By leveraging these resources, airlines can enhance operational reliability while reducing maintenance costs, a particularly valuable solution as carriers look to maintain competitiveness in today’s dynamic aviation landscape.

For Air Niugini, the adoption of Airbus FHS is expected to significantly boost efficiency and service quality as it integrates the A220 into its operations. With improved fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, and operational reliability, the A220 fleet and its comprehensive support system are set to transform the airline’s regional and international services.
