The global air cargo sector has entered a dynamic new era as the Airbus A350F freighter successfully completed its maiden test flight. Registered as F-WXLD (MSN 700), the first of two planned test aircraft took off equipped with specialized flight test instrumentation to evaluate its core systems and capabilities. The inaugural sortie lasted four hours and ten minutes, with a dedicated Airbus Flight Test crew piloting the large freighter up to a cruising altitude of 25,000 feet. During this historic flight, the test crew conducted a series of essential initial evaluations focused on verifying basic airworthiness, basic flying qualities, and ensuring that all fundamental aircraft systems performed precisely as predicted. This successful mission officially marks the beginning of an extensive flight test campaign expected to span over nine months leading up to certification.

Expressing immense pride in the achievement, Lars Wagner, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, emphasized the strategic significance of the new platform for global logistics. “This maiden flight is a major milestone for the A350F and for our customers worldwide. As the latest development of our highly successful A350 platform, the A350F is a true game-changer for the air cargo market, combining unmatched operational flexibility, fuel efficiency, and range. I am immensely proud of the extraordinary dedication and hard work of all the teams who have made this achievement possible,” said Wagner.

Designed to meet the evolving demands of modern global air freight, the A350F is engineered to be the most advanced cargo aircraft in the world. Powered by state-of-the-art Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft brings an impressive reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 40 percent compared to competing aircraft with similar payload-range capabilities. In addition, it holds the distinction of being the very first new-build freighter to fully comply with the latest ICAO CO₂ emission standards, highlighting its role in promoting environmental efficiency within long-haul aviation.

The structural efficiency of the aircraft is largely driven by its modern design, which incorporates more than 70% advanced materials. This extensive use of light and durable composites results in a maximum take-off weight that is 46 tonnes lighter than competing aircraft models. Despite this weight advantage, the A350F delivers incredible operational strength, featuring a impressive payload capability of up to 111 tonnes and an operational range of up to 8,700 kilometers. These figures allow cargo operators to seamlessly deploy the widebody freighter on high-demand international long-haul trade routes.

Market momentum for the new freighter platform continues to build rapidly as production accelerates in Toulouse. The second A350F prototype, designated as MSN 701, is currently in an advanced stage of final assembly and is scheduled to enter the paint shop within the coming weeks. Airline and cargo operator confidence in the program remains exceptionally high. By the end of August 2026, the A350F had already secured 115 orders from 14 disclosed customers, successfully capturing up to 59% of the market share in the large freighter category.
