ST Engineering officially marked a major milestone in its commercial aviation operations today with the formal opening of its new Commercial Aerospace airframe maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility at Changi Creek, located within Singapore’s Changi Airport. Serving as the Group’s fourth airframe maintenance, repair, and overhaul site in Singapore, this state-of-the-art expansion significantly increases the company’s overall capacity within one of the world’s primary aviation hubs. The strategic development is designed to strengthen the global airframe maintenance, repair, and overhaul network of ST Engineering’s Commercial Aerospace business, providing essential support to meet the growing global demand for commercial aircraft maintenance services.

The grand opening ceremony was graced by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Trade), Gan Kim Yong. Spanning an impressive 84,000 square meters, the massive facility features four dedicated widebody aircraft bays. Once the facility reaches full operational capability, it will add an additional 40% capacity to ST Engineering’s widebody airframe maintenance, repair, and overhaul network in Singapore. In practical terms, this expansion potentially translates to approximately 100 additional widebody aircraft being serviced in Singapore each year. This significant boost in capacity provides airline customers with enhanced scheduling flexibility and assured access to critical maintenance slots at a time when airline fleets are expanding rapidly and existing aircraft are remaining in active service for longer periods.

Engineered specifically for a new generation of airframe maintenance, the facility deeply integrates advanced digitization, automation, and artificial intelligence technologies to maximize operational efficiency, enhance workflow visibility, and deliver superior maintenance outcomes. End-to-end visibility across the entire maintenance lifecycle is enabled through advanced digital planning systems, automated storage and retrieval solutions, robotics, and electronic documentation rooms. These integrated systems work in unison to foster highly streamlined and data-driven maintenance operations.

The site incorporates cutting-edge technology into daily routines. Drones are deployed to perform general visual inspections with significantly increased speed and precision, while Autonomous Mobile Robots automatically transport aircraft parts directly from storage areas to specific maintenance bays, optimizing workflow efficiency and reducing manual handling. Operational management is further supported by real-time maintenance dashboards that provide instant operational insights, allowing team members to make faster and better-informed decisions. Combined with artificial intelligence-enabled aircraft inspection and defect identification capabilities, these technologies collectively enhance maintenance quality, shorten aircraft turnaround times, and bolster overall operational safety, reliability, and customer service. Additionally, the building incorporates key environmental sustainability features, including on-site solar power generation and a rainwater harvesting system.

To support these advanced, technology-enabled operations, the facility is projected to employ over 500 people when fully ramped up. ST Engineering is committing to comprehensive training and upskilling programs focused on digital technologies and artificial intelligence-enabled work processes. This initiative aims to equip workforce members with the modern skills required to complement their technical expertise and work effectively alongside advanced automated technologies.

Regarding the strategic vision behind the investment, Kevin Chow, President of Commercial Aerospace at ST Engineering, shared his perspectives on how the development responds to modern airline requirements and strengthens local industry standing: “As airline fleets expand and aircraft stay in service longer, airlines need assured capacity, dependable reliability and consistently high quality. Our latest airframe facility aims to meet these customer expectations. This being Singapore’s latest aerospace facility designed for more technology-enabled MRO operations, it also reinforces the country’s strengths as a leading global aviation hub while supporting the development of advanced aerospace capabilities and skilled jobs here.”

Highlighting the broader economic and workforce impact of the project, Cindy Koh, Executive Vice President at Singapore Economic Development Board, emphasized the collaborative value of the investment: “ST Engineering’s new facility is a significant expansion of its MRO capacity and capabilities. The facility will feature advanced robotics, digital and AI capabilities that enable connected, automated and sustainable maintenance operations. These capabilities would provide opportunities for Singaporeans to upskill, work with exciting technologies and pursue rewarding careers in aerospace. We look forward to partnering companies like ST Engineering to further Singapore’s standing as a premier global aerospace and aviation hub.”

Beyond its footprint in Singapore, ST Engineering’s airframe maintenance, repair, and overhaul network in the Asia-Pacific region includes operational facilities in Guangzhou and Ezhou, China. The Group’s global capacity is set to expand further in the coming years, with a second hangar at Ezhou scheduled to become operational in the second half of 2027, alongside two new hangars in Pensacola, Florida, in the United States, which will progressively open starting in early 2027.
