Gulf Air Expands Fleet with Up to 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliners to Boost Global Network

Gulf Air (GF) is set to significantly enhance its long-haul capabilities with the addition of up to 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliners as part of its ongoing fleet modernization and network expansion strategy. The Bahrain-based carrier has signed an agreement with Boeing for 12 firm orders of the fuel-efficient widebody aircraft, with options for six more. Once finalized, this latest order will bring Gulf Air’s total commitment to 14 Boeing 787 jets, strengthening its position as a key player in the Middle East’s competitive aviation sector.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Bahrain’s Minister of Finance and National Economy, Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope and Gulf Air Group Chairman Khalid Taqi formalized the agreement, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two organizations.

“This agreement marks a transformative step in Gulf Air’s strategic growth journey as we expand our global footprint and modernize our fleet with one of the industry’s most advanced and efficient aircraft. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has proven to be an exceptional aircraft for our long-haul operations, and this new order reflects our confidence in its performance, passenger appeal, and contribution to our sustainability goals. We are proud to deepen our partnership with Boeing and reaffirm our commitment to positioning Bahrain as a key global aviation hub,” said Khalid Taqi.

Currently, Gulf Air operates 10 Boeing 787s, which serve as the backbone of its long-haul network, connecting over 50 destinations across Asia, Europe, and North America. The additional aircraft will enable Gulf Air to further strengthen its international network while enhancing passenger experience with the Dreamliner’s advanced technology and superior cabin comfort.

Stephanie Pope emphasized the significance of the deal, saying, “We are excited to build on our more than 60-year partnership with Gulf Air as we deliver the market-leading 787 Dreamliner to help the airline serve more passengers and connect more destinations. This investment underscores Gulf Air’s commitment to new technology and sustainable growth, reinforcing Bahrain’s role in global aviation.”

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner family is renowned for opening over 425 new nonstop routes since its introduction in 2011 and has carried more than 1 billion passengers worldwide. Its features, including larger windows, improved cabin air quality, and turbulence-sensing technology, have redefined the long-haul travel experience.

Gulf Air’s history with Boeing dates back to 1961, beginning with the DC-3 and progressing through a fleet of 37 Boeing aircraft delivered to date. This latest agreement further cements the carrier’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and service excellence as it looks to the future.
