Global aviation finance platform SMBC Aviation Capital has finalized a massive order with Boeing for one hundred B737 MAX narrowbody aircraft. The major commercial agreement includes sixty higher-capacity B737-10 models alongside forty B737-8 variants. This strategic purchase marks a crucial development in the global aircraft leasing market, signaling sustained confidence in Boeing’s flagship narrowbody family as airlines seek modernized fleets to keep up with surging international travel demand.
The deal holds extra significance as it marks SMBC Aviation Capital’s very first order for the B737-10, which stands as the highest-capacity variant within the B737 MAX lineup. Following this expansion, the lessor now boosts its owned, managed, and committed portfolio of B737 MAX aircraft to an impressive total of 450 jets.
By choosing the B737-10, SMBC Aviation Capital positions itself to meet growing airline appetite for single-aisle aircraft offering optimal seat-mile efficiency. The B737-10 features the lowest cost per seat among single-aisle commercial jets, seating up to 230 passengers in typical configurations while offering an operational range of 3,100 nautical miles, or approximately 5,740 kilometers. Incorporating this variant into its commercial lineup enables the lessor to diversify its asset portfolio, expand its customer base, and offer flexible deployment options to carrier partners navigating competitive short-to-medium-haul markets.
Leadership at SMBC Aviation Capital emphasized that the transaction reflects evolving market dynamics, noting that airline customers and investor partners are actively seeking to upgauge to larger aircraft like the B737-10 to maximize capacity on high-density routes. In addition, the deal reinforces a strong two-decade partnership between the lessor and Boeing, establishing a dependable, long-term pipeline of fuel-efficient narrowbody aircraft to support commercial airline expansion well into the next decade.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes highlighted the importance of the deal, expressing gratitude for SMBC’s continued confidence in the manufacturer and the B737 MAX program. The planemaker noted that the commitment underscores strong global demand for the aircraft family’s operational efficiency, versatility, and dispatch reliability.
With worldwide passenger traffic projected to grow at an annual rate of 4% over the next two decades, aircraft leasing companies are playing an increasingly pivotal role in commercial aviation. Lessors are actively expanding and modernizing their single-aisle fleets to equip airlines with versatile, fuel-efficient options that can adapt to varying route structures. To date, global aircraft lessors have ordered over 1,450 B737 MAX aircraft, accounting for approximately 20% of the entire B737 MAX order backlog.
