ANA Becomes a Member of IATA’s Turbulence Aware Platform

All Nippon Airways (ANA), the largest airline in Japan and a consistent 5-Star carrier for a decade, has announced its participation in the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Turbulence Aware platform. This milestone makes ANA the first Japanese airline to join the voluntary program, aimed at mitigating turbulence risks and enhancing safety measures in the aviation industry.

Turbulence Aware facilitates the collection and real-time sharing of flight data among participating airlines. This valuable information equips pilots and dispatchers with crucial insights to select optimal flight routes and altitudes, effectively navigating away from hazardous weather conditions.

ANA’s President and CEO, Shinichi Inoue, expressed pride in the airline’s involvement in the Turbulence Aware program, emphasizing safety as the top priority. By contributing important operational data from ANA flights worldwide, the airline aims to enhance its practices while also contributing to the overall safety of the aviation industry.

ANA plans to introduce the Turbulence Aware system on its Boeing 737 aircraft during the fiscal year 2023, with intentions to expand its implementation to other aircraft in the future. Turbulence, a significant concern for airline crew and passengers alike, will be better addressed through the sharing of information, thereby improving operational planning and forecasting.

Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, welcomed ANA’s participation, acknowledging the significance of having accurate and timely data for crews to avoid turbulence. He specifically highlighted ANA’s contribution to improving coverage in the Asia Pacific region.

Established in 1952 with just two helicopters, All Nippon Airways (ANA) has since grown to become Japan’s premier airline. In 2013, ANA HOLDINGS Inc. (ANA HD) was established as the largest airline group holding company in Japan, encompassing 69 companies, including ANA and Peach Aviation, the leading low-cost carrier in the country.

ANA holds the distinction of being a launch customer and the largest operator of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, making ANA HD the world’s largest Dreamliner owner. As a member of Star Alliance since 1999, ANA has forged joint venture agreements with renowned carriers such as United Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, and Austrian Airlines, granting it a truly global presence.

The airline’s commitment to providing superior service has earned it SKYTRAX’s prestigious 5-Star rating consecutively since 2013. ANA is the sole Japanese carrier to achieve this recognition for ten consecutive years. Additionally, Air Transport World has bestowed the “Airline of the Year” title upon ANA three times (2007, 2013, and 2018), a testament to its exceptional performance in the industry.

In 2021, ANA received a 5-star COVID-19 safety rating from SKYTRAX, recognizing the airline’s comprehensive initiatives to maintain a safe, clean, and hygienic environment both at airports and onboard its aircraft. These efforts are encapsulated in the ANA Care Promise.

Distinguished as the only aviation company to be awarded the Gold Class distinction at the 2022 S&P Global Sustainability Awards, ANA continues to prioritize sustainability. ANA HD has also been consistently included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index list for the past six years, as well as the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index list for seven consecutive years.

With ANA’s participation in the IATA Turbulence Aware platform, the airline reaffirms its commitment to advancing safety measures in the aviation industry, setting a commendable precedent for its Japanese counterparts.
