The Airbus Asia Training Centre (AATC), a joint venture between European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Singapore Airlines (SQ), is set to house an A220 Full-Flight Simulator (FFS) for the Asia Pacific region at its Singapore campus. Scheduled to become fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2027, the new A220 simulator is being established to support the growing regional demand for comprehensive pilot and maintenance training on Airbus’s latest-generation single-aisle aircraft program.
The strategic deployment of these dedicated A220 Training Services will be executed in close partnership with Flight Training Alliance (FTA). Serving as the official Airbus Authorised Training Provider for the A220 aircraft family, FTA itself operates as a specialized joint venture between simulator giant CAE and Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT). Under the terms of the new agreement, FTA will be responsible for deploying the state-of-the-art Full Flight Simulator, while the team at the Airbus Asia Training Centre will directly oversee and manage facility operations alongside overall training delivery.
Industry leaders officially announced this major regional expansion during the Asia Pacific Aviation Training Summit (APATS) 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand. Emphasizing the operational significance of bringing the modern flight training hardware directly to the region, General Manager of Airbus Asia Training Centre Silvia Meloni outlined how the strategic move reinforces Airbus’s overall market footprint.
“Establishing A220 training capabilities in the region is a strategic enabler for Airbus’s growth footprint in Asia Pacific. The new A220 simulator will provide airline operators across the region with convenient access to world-class training, helping train their pilots closer to home while supporting the safe and efficient entry into service of their A220 fleet. We also anticipate an increase in training demand for the A220 as the aircraft programme continues to gain momentum in this region,” Meloni said.
As the single-aisle A220 family continues its steady commercial expansion across Asia Pacific skies, placing a dedicated training simulator in Singapore represents a vital milestone in the broader corporate strategy from Airbus to deliver seamless, top-tier operational support right where its airline customers operate. This localized infrastructure helps ensure that regional A220 fleets achieve and sustain the highest standards of flight safety, operational efficiency, and dispatch reliability.
According to data published in the latest Airbus Global Market Forecast, long-term trends over the next 20 years indicate that rapid urbanization across the region will progressively shift toward smaller secondary cities. This structural shift is prompting commercial airlines to expand regional air connectivity well beyond traditional megacity hubs. Featuring an impressive non-stop range reaching up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km), operating costs per seat that are 25% lower compared to previous-generation competing aircraft, and a right-sized passenger capacity spanning from 100 up to 160 seats, the A220 is uniquely positioned to empower airlines as they open new and commercially viable flight routes across rapidly growing economies in the Asia-Pacific territory.
Global market adoption of the clean-sheet narrowbody jet has shown strong momentum. By the end of July 2026, Airbus had successfully delivered 532 A220 aircraft to more than 25 operators worldwide, while overall commercial commitments for the program had officially surpassed 1,100 aircraft orders.
To support this expanding global operator base, AATC and FTA will jointly deliver a complete suite of specialized A220 training offerings, encompassing initial flight crew type-ratings and routine recurrent training modules. These courses will be instructed and maintained by a dedicated, highly trained team of certified A220 flight instructors and specialized operations technicians.
Situated within Seletar Aerospace Park, AATC stands as one of the largest and most comprehensive flight crew training facilities in the entire global Airbus network. The facility regularly delivers type rating and recurrent training programs for every in-production commercial Airbus aircraft type, utilizing 10 dedicated FFS bays. Within its current lineup, four bays are dedicated to the widebody A350, two bays serve the best-selling A320 family, and one bay each is allocated to the A330 and the double-deck A380. Additionally, one simulator bay houses an FFS for the ATR 72-600 regional turboprop, produced under the joint venture between Airbus and Italian aerospace company Leonardo. Complementing its full-flight simulators, the Singapore centre features six fixed cockpit training devices and extensive classroom spaces, giving it the operational capacity to train up to 10,000 aviation professionals per year.
