Dubai-based mega-carrier Emirates (EK) has announced a major update to its local leadership team by appointing aviation veteran Khalid Al Zarooni as its new Country Manager for the Philippines. In this vital role, Al Zarooni takes full responsibility for steering the airline’s passenger, cargo, and commercial operations across the archipelago. The transition comes at a strategically significant moment as the Gulf airline continues to aggressively ramp up its presence and flight frequencies within the highly competitive Southeast Asian aviation landscape.
Bringing nearly two decades of intensive international aviation experience back to the region, Al Zarooni has established a heavily decorated career within Emirates since joining the flag carrier back in 2006. He has navigated diverse global regions, leading high-performance multicultural teams across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Most recently, he held the critical post of Vice President for Saudi Arabia, a key revenue-generating territory that he managed starting in 2024.

Throughout his impressive tenure with the airline, the seasoned executive has successfully managed complex commercial strategies in various markets, holding crucial leadership stations in Cyprus, Uganda, Tanzania, Morocco, Greece, and Kuwait, alongside his latest assignment in Saudi Arabia. His core strengths lie in navigating complicated government relations, driving high-value corporate sales, and establishing deep stakeholder engagement across culturally diverse aviation environments.
This leadership prowess has consistently translated into network-wide recognition for his assignments. Under his guidance, local stations secured the prestigious Top Sales Team Award in Morocco and the Top Corporate Award in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, while stationed in Europe, Al Zarooni earned the distinct honor of being elected as the President and Chairperson of the Board of Airline Representatives by the foreign airline community in Greece. This made him the youngest individual in the history of the organization to hold that seat, a testament to the heavy trust and respect he earned from his industry peers for his highly transparent and professional approach.
Academically, Al Zarooni holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Wolverhampton in England. Armed with this robust business foundation and a wealth of cross-continental insight, the executive expressed great optimism about taking the helm of the Philippine station, which represents a corner stone of the carrier’s broader regional operations.
Reflecting on his new appointment, Al Zarooni emphasized that the Philippines has firmly remained one of the most vital markets for Emirates within Southeast Asia. He noted that the airline boasts a deeply rooted 36-year operational history in the country, and he eagerly anticipates collaborating closely with local customers, travel trade partners, and government stakeholders. His immediate focus will center on identifying fresh growth avenues and fortifying the market share of the Dubai-based carrier against both regional and global competitors.
This high-profile leadership shuffle perfectly aligns with an ongoing capacity injection that Emirates deployed across its Philippine gateways. Earlier this year, the carrier expanded its aggregate flight operations through Manila, Cebu, and Clark, bringing its total to 32 weekly flights. This robust network expansion seamlessly funnels local corporate travelers, vacationers, and overseas Filipino workers directly through its primary hub at Dubai International Airport, linking them efficiently to hundreds of destinations spanning across Europe, the Americas, and Africa.
