Singapore Airlines (SQ) is set to significantly expand its European network over the coming months, responding to surging travel demand and strengthening its international hub at Changi Airport (SIN). The Star Alliance member announced a major ramp-up in flight frequencies to several key European cities, alongside the introduction of a brand-new destination to its route map.
Expanding the Spanish Footprint with Madrid
A major highlight of this network expansion is the launch of a new five-times-weekly service to Madrid via Barcelona (BCN), scheduled to commence on 26 October 2026, pending regulatory approvals. This move will see Singapore Airlines restructure its existing twice-weekly Singapore-to-Barcelona operations to accommodate the new tag flight to the Spanish capital. With this development, Madrid becomes the fifteenth European destination for the carrier and its second gateway in Spain.
Senior leadership at Singapore Airlines noted that Europe remains a vital market for the carrier, and these operational adjustments reflect its long-term commitment to the region. The airline has observed robust travel demand for European destinations, prompting the frequency increases to major hubs. Madrid, in particular, is recognized as an increasingly popular tourist destination as well as a key financial and business hub that links Europe to South America, offering passengers greater choice and value.
Surge in the United Kingdom and Germany Frequencies
Passengers traveling to the United Kingdom will soon benefit from enhanced flexibility. Starting 13 July 2026, the airline’s services between Singapore (SIN) and Manchester (MAN) will increase from five flights a week to a daily operation. Following this, the current three-times-weekly service to London Gatwick (LGW) will also be upgraded to a daily frequency starting 25 October 2026. This adjustment will provide the airline with two daily services to Gatwick, bringing its total footprint in London to six flights a day when combined with the existing four daily services to London Heathrow (LHR).
Germany will also see a notable capacity boost. Singapore Airlines plans to introduce a new three-times-weekly service to Munich (MUC) starting 26 October 2026. This addition will bump the total frequency to the Bavarian capital to ten weekly services, offering business and leisure travelers better scheduling options.
Network Restructuring in Italy and Spain
The expansion brings a shift in how the airline serves its Mediterranean destinations. The carrier’s direct services between Singapore (SIN) and Milan (MIL) will increase from four times weekly to a daily schedule starting 25 October 2026. To accommodate the new Spanish routing, the existing three-times-weekly fifth-freedom service that connects Milan (MIL) and Barcelona (BCN) will be discontinued effective 27 October 2026.
The upcoming Singapore-Barcelona-Madrid route will be operated using the long-haul variant of the Airbus A350-900. This aircraft features a three-class configuration with a total of 253 seats, divided into 42 in Business Class, 24 in Premium Economy Class, and 187 in Economy Class.
Flight Schedules and Ticket Sales
The inaugural flight to Madrid is scheduled to depart Singapore late in the evening at 2330H local time on 26 October 2026, arriving in Barcelona at 0640H the following morning. After a brief stopover, the aircraft will depart Barcelona at 0740H and touch down in Madrid at 0850H local time.
For the return journey, the flight is scheduled to depart Madrid at 1000H local time on 27 October 2026, landing in Barcelona at 1115H. The leg back to Changi Airport will depart Barcelona at 1235H, completing the journey in Singapore at 0825H the next day. Tickets for the new Madrid service will become available for purchase in June 2026 through the airline’s official distribution channels, while inventory for the additional frequencies to Manchester, Milan, Munich, and London Gatwick will be rolled out progressively.
