United Airlines (UA) has unveiled its newest cabin innovation, bringing a concept highly popular in Europe directly to the North American market. The Chicago-based carrier announced a new Economy Plus seating tier on its incoming fleet of Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This unique row configuration guarantees a vacant middle seat, replacing it with a shared, custom-designed console table to maximize personal space and elbow room.

The Chicago-based carrier is slated to begin selling tickets for these upgraded seats later this year, aligning with the domestic launch of its highly anticipated A321XLR aircraft. United plans to outfit all 50 units of its Airbus A321XLR order with this premium row. Looking to the future, the airline is also exploring the possibility of introducing similar configurations to other aircraft types within its mainline fleet.

With this announcement, United is positioned to become the sole U.S. airline offering a dedicated blocked middle-seat configuration in its extra-legroom cabin. This move quickly follows the carrier’s previous announcement of United Relax Row, an economy class product for its widebody Boeing B787 and Boeing B777 fleets. Relax Row, which is expected to debut in early 2027, will allow multiple rows of seats to transform into a couch-style flat surface.

Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized that the airline is actively investing from nose to tail to provide travelers with an abundance of choice and value across all cabins. He added that the Airbus A321XLR, as the carrier’s newest fleet addition, offers a diverse array of premium elements, ranging from all-aisle access lie-flat suites in Polaris business class to this new, spacious Economy Plus alternative.

The physical hardware of the new row includes a permanently fixed console table spanning from armrest to armrest across the blocked middle seat. Outfitted with a soft, leather-like covering, the table features two integrated cup indentations to help travelers stay organized on long-haul routes. Beyond the enhanced elbow room, passengers booking this row will still enjoy the three inches of additional legroom that standard Economy Plus seats already offer.

While United plans to share exact pricing details closer to the on-sale date, the underlying aircraft has been meticulously tailored to serve as a premium narrowbody workhorse. The long-range Airbus A321XLR will replace United’s aging Boeing B757s on short- to medium-haul international routes. It boasts a premium-heavy configuration of 32 business class seats, including a brand-new United Polaris Studio suite with a private sliding door.

Every passenger onboard will have access to high-definition 4K OLED screens with seamless Bluetooth pairing, ranging from 19 inches in the Polaris cabin to 13 inches in the main economy cabin. The aircraft also features oversized overhead bins designed to hold rollaboard bags vertically and a dedicated, walk-up snack bar situated in the rear of the economy cabin.

United expects to launch the A321XLR on domestic routes this fall before transitioning the aircraft to international transatlantic routes in early 2027. Operating with five flight attendants on transatlantic segments, the airline maintains the same cabin crew staffing levels currently utilized on its Boeing B757 operations.
